10:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (10:2 FTS) is the longest-chain FTS compound monitored under UCMR5. It is found in specific AFFF formulations and industrial applications. Due to its high molecular weight, 10:2 FTS is less water-soluble than shorter FTS compounds and tends to sorb more strongly to soils and sediments near contamination sources. However, it can degrade over time to produce PFDA and other long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids. Its detection in drinking water typically indicates proximity to a major AFFF contamination source.
