How Reverse Osmosis Removes PFAS

RO works through size exclusion. The semi-permeable membrane allows water molecules (0.00028 microns) to pass while blocking larger molecules. PFAS compounds are significantly larger than water molecules. Even PFOA, one of the smaller PFAS compounds at roughly 414 daltons, is reliably rejected by RO membranes rated for 150-200 dalton rejection.

The process also provides secondary removal through the carbon pre-filters and post-filters included in most RO systems. These handle any PFAS that might bypass the membrane, plus they remove chlorine that would otherwise damage the membrane.

Tank vs Tankless: Which Is Better?
